Des Moines in person school, partial in-person instruction

Des Moines Public Schools will consider a plan during Monday's school board meeting to offer students a hybrid option of partial in-person instruction.
In a statement Friday evening, Des Moines officials said the school board will be presented with a plan that is compliant with the state's mandate that schools provide at least half of their classes in person.
Details are still being finalized, the district said. However, it will include two choices: an in-person option that would provide instruction 50% or more of the time in school, or a voluntary all-virtual option.
It's unclear how soon the district, which is the state's largest, would implement the hybrid model. However, it said that if a plan is "approved by the school board on Monday, DMPS families will receive a communications on Tuesday with additional information to help make a choice that's best for them as we work to educate students in the midst of a pandemic."
Des Moines schools spokesman Phil Roeder said a "proposed timeline is being finalized and ultimately will be up to the board."
"If a new plan is approved, there would need to be some transition time to allow parents to consider options as well as address logistical plans such as bus routes and meal service," he said.
